  • Asset: The smallest, indivisible digital unit for information transfer, e.g. a picture or a short text, a plain picture/text combination or a small and simple animation.

  • Freeware: Software which is provided by the originator for free use. Often privately programmed and offered as freeware. The author sometimes asks to be sent a greeting card or a gift, if the programme is used.
  • Free Software: Allows the users spreading the programme, seeing the source code, changing it as well as spreading modifications.

  • Individualisation of teaching: eLearning is especially well suitable to adjust to the individual needs of learners. "To fetch" learners at their momentary state and to offer them selfcontrolled and independent learning, are the aims of individualised teaching.

  • Learning Module: A learning module consist of learning objects and combines those with a pedagocical concept.
  • Learning Object: A learning object consists of several learning assets that are structured in a pedagocially meaningful way.
  • Learning Unit: A learning unit (corresponding to a teaching unit) consist of e-learning modules and combines those with a pedagocical framework and hints for class organisation in the meaning of blended learning.

  • Open Source: Open Source is often used as a synonym to free software, however, can be licensed aberrantly also in a way that the source code may be seen, but not be changed.

  • Podcasts: Podcasting means the production and online publishing of mostly audio and video files. Production and online supply of mostly audio, but also video-files. The word comes, actually, from the name "IPod" (the media player of the company Apple) and Broadcasting ("broadcasting company"). A Podcast is, actually, a series of contributions ("episodes") which any time can be retrieved online - regardless of official transmitting times-. Similar to"Video/Audio on Demand" which are charged, while Podcasts are usually offered free of charge.

  • Second Life: Second Life is a free 3D virtual world where users can socialize, connect and create using free voice and text chat. http://www.secondlife.com/
  • Shareware: Mostly the unrestricted use is possible only after payment of a small amount. The functionality or time of use is often limited. After payment and activation the software loses shareware state.
  • Social Software: These are software systems, which serve the human communication, interaction and cooperation. These systems build up communities over the web and often develop self-organised.

  • Vodcasts: Vodcasting (also referred to as video-podcasting, vidcast or videocast) can be regarded as an extended version of the podcast. With video-podcasting everybody can be a viewer and programme director at the same time.
